Motion comics have hit the big time. Many of the major players in the comics industry now have a stake in this format, which has imparted significant extra momentum to the move towards digital distribution. Warner Premiere has led the charge with Watchmen and has expanded their slate this year with Superman: Red Son and other titles. Marvel is bringing Spider-Woman and the Astonishing X-Men to the format.

I’ll be at the San Diego Comic-Con today (Friday 7/24) showing off Ruben & Lullaby as a taste of what’s to come for this format. No motion comic to date has used interactivity to affect the emotions of the characters, the melodies in the score, or the outcome of the story—all of which happen in Ruben & Lullaby. When digital comics take interactivity seriously, all kinds of amazing work becomes possible.

Comics theorist Scott McCloud took a moment to mention Ruben & Lullaby on his blog—a wonderful bit of synchronicity, as on the very same day I was talking up Understanding Comics to a group of students at UC Riverside as part of a lecture entitled “Stories as Instruments.” I, like many interactive and game designers, am heavily indebted to Scott for his work, so a mention like this is especially gratifying. Thanks!

This swelling of interest in “motion comics” is really interesting to me. Fad or not, and irrespective of the debate over whether motion comics are actually comics (see this excellent post on the subject), the demand we’re seeing for these works points up our continued interest in comic-derived media in a variety of flavors. I’m glad to see these developments, and I think more are on the way, especially as interactive designers really start to look at putting users in motion along with their comics. We’ve got a few ideas there…
